1. San Diego Bike Pirate

Seen this morning on my way to work: older gentleman in a stocking cap on a high-handlebar fixie with a white rat on his shoulder, leaning into the wind.  (No photo, unfortunately - it happened too fast)

I believe this is a tie with the woman skateboarding down my street in a bikini top and a skirt made out of neckties.

  2. It was “hot” this week

It got over 90º F a couple times this week. The weather man sounded apologetic, friends were refusing to turn on kitchen appliances, and I overheard a neighbor on the phone exclaiming, “oh God it was so hot today!”

Here’s the thing, though: if I could overhear my neighbor, then it wasn’t that hot. If it was a bona fide heat wave, we’d all have our air conditioning turned on 24 hours a day and nobody’d be able to hear each other. It was warm and sticky during the day, but then the sun went away, and it was nice again.

That’s the thing Dallas couldn’t figure out while we lived there. Sure, go ahead and be hot while the sun is up, but at night, cool the hell down. It’s only fair.

Here’s what it was like in April, which was entirely gorgeous:

  6. Caught you, California

Confirmed: California keeps all the good avocados to themselves and sends the meh ones to Texas and elsewhere (I don’t know, maybe California has a friend somewhere and is all, like psst hey Michigan and passes some under the desk, but it’s not Texas).

Damn, that was like eating ice cream for breakfast.

  9. Calla lillies.  They’re everywhere in this neighborhood; a number of houses have beds with 20-30 open blooms right now.  These are in my roommates’ back yard.

  10. Why San Diego?

Bryan has had this conversation a lot lately:

    You’re moving to San Diego?

    Yep.

    Why?

    Y’ever been there?

And it usually ended there with an acknowledging shrug and a smile. Everyone seems to know it’s a beautiful place, with perhaps the best weather in the U.S. Not everybody puts much weight on the weather factor when it comes to deciding where to live, and that may be a mistake. Nice weather is invigorating. Oppressive weather kills ambitions.

Lyn and Bryan visited a friend in San Diego in June of 2009 and quickly fell in love with the place. The weather was 98% of perfect, and the friend they were visiting apologized for the so-called “June Gloom,” which was adorable.

About 18 months later, Lyn followed up with a recruiter who thought she might like a job in San Diego, and Bryan was transitioning to freelance work, so now they’re here.

What will they find? That’s what this site is for.
